Fashion Guide: Mixing Prints

The most transcendent trend is that of mixing prints. Season after season we see it on the runways, on editorials and on the street, but since it is a daring look a lot of us have been pretty much apprehensive of trying it ourselves. Well, I must say that I have tried it a few times and it's when I have gotten the most compliments, so it is very fulfilling when you pull that off. Not because of the compliments (well, that doesn't hurt either), but mainly because you took a risk and not only did it pay off, it motivated and inspired you to keep pushing your own limits when it comes to fashion. It shows that you can have fun with it because it brings out the most important part of the equation: you! So here are some tips for pulling it off:

La tendencia más trascendente es la de combinar estampados. Temporada tras temporada la vemos en las pasarelas, en los editoriales y en la calle, pero como es un look atrevido muchas de nosotras hemos sido un poco aprensivas para intentarlo. Pues les puedo decir que lo he intentado unas cuantas veces y es cuando más cumplidos me han dado, es bien gratificante el ver cuando uno logra que funcione. No solo por los cumplidos (no es que vengan mal), pero es mayormente por que tomaste un riesgo y no solamente funcionó, te motivó e inspiró a seguir empujando tus límites en cuanto a la moda. Demuestra que puedes divertirte con ello por que resalta lo mas importante de la ecuación: tú! Así que aquí hay unos tips para que puedas ejecutar el look:

Color Combination

It is key when it comes to mixing prints that the colors of the pieces match. The pieces have to have at least one color that ties them together, I wouldn't go as far as more than three colors though unless that's how many colors both prints have. A perfect example are the outfits below, the first one is a monochrome combination, and the second one is a colorful one. The top and the bottom in the monochrome are the same shade of orange tying in both the stripes and the circle print. On the second look, the top and the bottom share the orange and the pink matching the stripes with the florals (always a great match!). It is all about making it easy for the brain to process when you look at it, once the eye/brain picks up that tie-in color everything makes sense. This is what sets you apart from crazy bag lady.

Es clave cuando tiene que ver con combinar estampados, que los colores en las piezas combinen. Las piezas tienen que tener aunque sea un color que las combine, no iría tan lejos como combinar más de tres a menos que ambos estampados tengan la misma cantidad. Un ejemplo perfecto son los outfits de arriba, el primero es monocromático y el segundo es colorido. La camisa y la falda del monocromático son el mismo tono de naranja atando las líneas con el estampado de círculos. En el segundo look, la camisa y el pantalón comparten el naranja y el rosado combinando las líneas con las flores (siempre una buena combinación!). Es todo sobre hacerle fácil al cerebro procesarlo cuando lo ve, cuando ya el ojo/cerebro reconoce el o los colores que atan todo hace sentido. Esto es lo que te diferencia de la "crazy bag lady".

Contrast

Now, we established that there has to be at least one tie in color. The next key point is contrast, and what I mean by contrast is that when it comes to the "background" of both pieces, one has to lighter than the other. Some will say that the lighter background should go on the top, but I don't think that is definitive. I think that you can decide which works better for you or which you feel more comfortable with. Remember, always trust your gut. If you like it and it makes you feel good then wear it! I'm going to show you both examples so you can see that it works both ways.

Ahora, ya que establecimos que tiene que haber por lo menos un color que combine. El próximo punto clave es el contraste, lo que quiero decir con contraste es que en lo que tiene que ver con el "fondo" de ambas piezas, una tiene que ser más clara que la otra. Algunos dirán que lo más claro debe ir arriba, pero yo no lo veo así de definitivo. Pienso que puedes decidir cuál es lo que funciona mejor para tí o lo que te haga sentir más cómoda. Recuerda, siempre confía en tu instinto. Si te gusta y te hace sentir bien entonces póntelo! Les voy a enseñar ambos ejemplos para que vean que ambas maneras funcionan.
