// Two weeks ago I shared the following photo on Instagram with the caption: "Do not be afraid of being your own #wcw! Admire and love your imperfections as much as your attributes", and I encouraged each person to comment on their own. I gave as an example: "Imperfection: The rolls of my hips Attribute: My red hair. ♥ ️" When I sat down to read and answer their messages I noticed something, all the people who commented mentioned parts of their body normally selected by society to determine "beauty standards" or "lack of them" - hips, abdomen, nose, arms, scars. On the other hand, as attributes they mentioned parts of the body for which we are less judged  by and from which we can usually get compliments - eyes, hair, smile.

// I made that post mainly to motivate people to come out of the comfort zone and dare to openly expose their greatest insecurity. For me that is the first act of courage and acceptance, highlight what others say is imperfect or reasons for insecurity and show that those same "imperfections" are what make us different and wear them with pride.

// Although it may seem contradictory to use and accept the word "imperfection", for me it is an act of rebellion. So we take back what someone can use to hurt us and take away the power of those who use it a derogatory way and turn it into something powerful and liberating. Why? Because nobody is really perfect, so why continue to romanticize perfection instead of romaticize imperfections, uniqueness. We are going to turn imperfection into the synonym for attribute - in a way to highlight with pride those that make us unique.

I liked it, not just because of what the quote simply says - "Do not compare yourself to others, if you do, you are insulting yourself." - but because of the message that goes with the quote:

// We always focus on admiring and celebrating the same imperfections in other people because we identify with them, but even recognizing this we are not conscious of celebrating with the same enthusiasm those imperfections in ourselves.

// So I have a challenge for you. I want you to look for at least 3 people who you admire and choose a characteristic for which you admire them. If you admire that in those people it is very likely that you share that characteristic with them. When you have them, you will turn them into your mantra and you will say it every morning in front of the mirror.

Yo también lo hice, and we are in this together, así que empiezo yo: // I did it too, and we are in this together, so I'll start:

Lizzo

// I admire Lizzo because she has changed the game for plus size women. Her body positive lyrics and videos resonate on a deep level with everyone that listens and watches because of how open she is about self-love and acceptance. She's all about celebrating who you are, no matter your race, age, sex, sexual orientation, so my mantra piece from her is: "Don't need to wear a crown to know that I'm a Queen".

// Janelle Monáe broke the mold when she first broke out as an artist by pushing the lines musically and from an aesthetic perspective. She challenged the societal definition of femininity and what it means to be a woman. She is unapologetic, bold and always herself. She didn't succumb to the pressure and has risen above all that people expected. So my take-away mantra from Janelle is: "You are bold, you break the mold being you".

// Gabi is the OG plus size blogger. She was the first to achieve a more mainstream status through her originality and fashion-forward sense of style. She not only pushes the limit for plus size women, but for women of color as well. Being true to herself  and with hard work she has been able to launch multiple fashion lines, from swimsuits to clothing and even lingerie. My mantra from Gabi is: "You are your best asset. You can achieve anything you put your mind to."
